Bridgeport Track & Field Email

www.BridgeportTrack.com has moved to a new website hosting service.  We are now with GoDaddy.com.  With the move we are saving the Parents Association a substantial amount of money compared with the rates we were being charged.  In addition, we now can offer you your very own BridgeportTrack.com email address:  yourname@BridgeportTrack.com.  If you are interested contact Coach Griffith to get yours today.

Another Successful Season

While I have been negligent in keeping up with this blog, the team has been busy completing another exciting and successful season of Bridgeport Track & Field.  Both the boys and girls teams have been crowned Harrison County and BIG 10 Champions.  The girls have broken two school records and for the boys four records have fallen.  The effort shown at the State Meet this year was phenomenal.  It may be one of the finest exhibitions of guts and determination I have seen out of a Bridgeport Track & Field team.  Everyone should be proud of what was accomplished this season.  We regret losing so many fine seniors to graduation and a few underclassmen to family moves, but that is the nature of school sports.  We now begin focusing on replacing and rebuilding for next year.  Current team members need to keep lifting and working out over the summer.  There are more collegiate summer camps in our area than ever before for all events.  Plus competitions for AAU and USATF in Charleston.  Fall sports (Cross Country, Football and Soccer) provide more opportunities to train and improve.  Our off season conditioning program will be completely reworked for this year.  And we all need to begin serious recruiting efforts to attract new talented athletes to help next years team.

Only 277 days until Bridgeport Track & Field 2011.  Let’s get started!

Cleanup Day

We would like to have a cleanup day on Friday April 16, 2010.  In order to get ready for the Harry Green Invitational on Saturday, we need to clean the facility up a little.  Blowers to remove leaves and gravel from the track and runways are the most needed item.  If you can volunteer to bring one down and help with that it would be appreciated.  The athletes will be positioning hurdles, benches, and picking up trash around the track and field event areas.  The athletes will be bringing home a paper concerning this as well.  Any help would be truly appreciated.

Fundraisers…Sorry

I know the thought of fundraisers is unpleasant, but in todays world it seems to be a necessity for groups and organizations to get the funding they need to operate well.  We are unfortunately no exception.  This week you should receive up to three different items.

First is the Harry Green Invitational Program Ads.  These are ads to go in the meet program given out at the Harry Green Statewide Invitationals, both high school and middle school.  The money goes to help provide both the Middle School and High School teams with equipment, coaching supplements, travel expenses, food costs, year end picnic expenses, etc.  This money is put in the Parents Association and is used to directly help the Track Team.  This is for both HS and MS.   We need these back by March 19th.

Second are Spaghetti Dinner Tickets.  The All-Sports Boosters are asking that we help sell Spaghetti Dinner Tickets for their upcoming dinner.  This money goes to the Boosters, but they do help by providing meals to the team for out of county trips.  This is for the High School team only.  Mrs. Henderson will be collecting the money and unsold tickets at the Parents Association meeting on Tuesday March 9th and at the field during practice on Wednesday March 10th.

Finally, the third item is the Bridgeport Track & Field Spirit Packs.  This is really not a fundraiser.  The Parents Association provides this as a service to the kids.  We do not make any money on this.  The items are sold at cost to the kids on an optional basis.  No athlete is required to purchase the pack.  This year we are selling  a t-shirt, shorts and a back sack.  They are black with a white logo on each.   This is for both HS and MS teams.  Orders need to be back to Coach Griffith by Friday March 12, 2010.

All of these activities have accompanying paperwork that your student athlete should be bringing home.  Thanks in advance to all those who participate in any or all of these programs.

First Day a Success

The first day of practice was a success.  We have a lot of excited kids and coaches.  We will be going outside at least for a while each and every day, so make sure to be prepared for the days weather.  Click on a picture to see a larger version.

Parents Association Meeting

We will be having a Parents Association Meeting on Tuesday March 9, 2010 at 7:00pm in the Bridgeport High School cafeteria.  The meeting is open to all parents of Bridgeport High School and Bridgeport Middle School track & field athletes.

The meeting will cover information concerning the association’s budget, election of officers, organization of home track meets (including the Harry Green Invitational), officiating, etc.  Several of the track coaches will also be in attendance to answer any questions you may have concerning the track & field program at BHS and BMS.

First Day of Practice

Today is the first day of practice under the new program.  The BHS Boys and Girls teams are combining under the new system.  New girls coach Ryan Nicewarner will be partnering with boys coach Jon Griffith to create a fully combined team.  Helping with the new program are our assistant coaches:  Jeff Weimer, Steve Hastings, Steve Sellas, Stephanie Sellas and Jerry Burgess.  We believe that the new organization of the team will benefit everyone and allow us to acheive the best out of everyone on the team.

We will be practicing every Monday – Friday that school is in session.  We will meet at the field and will be outside for at least a short time each day.  Weather conditions will determine the extent of our outdoor practice.  The remainder of practice will be conducted indoors at the field.  Please remember to pack and dress accordingly for indoor and outdoor workouts each day.   We may hold some additional practices on non-school days.  These practices will be announced in advance.

Also it is important to return your paperwork as soon as possible.

We are very excited about the season and hope  you are too.

BHS Track & Field Television

The BHS Track & Field Television Broadcast System will be online this spring.  We will be providing live video feeds of all of Bridgeport’s home meets.   We will also have real time results published as the meet progresses.  Both of these features are past the testing stage and ready for this upcoming season.  These should be a nice tool for out of town relatives and former team members to keep up with some of the action occuring at Wayne Jamison Field.  To access these features go to www.BridgeportTrack.com and click on the Miscellaneous tab in the left hand menu.  Look for Free Stuff-Videos or you can go directly there by clicking here ( http://www.bridgeporttrack.com/LIVEVIDEO/Live.htm )

Throwers and Jumpers

For the throwers and jumpers, there are coaches in Morgantown (associated with WVU and Explosion Athletics) that will provide, for a fee, private or group lessons.  To find out more or make arrangements, go to the Explosion Athletics practice session on Monday Dec 14, 2009 at 5:30 in the WVU Shell Building.

Pole Vaulters and Hurdlers

Attention all pole vaulters and hurdlers, there is a new club team for these two events in Morgantown.  Explosion Athletics is providing first class off season coaching and facilities at the WVU Shell Building.  Their website is www.ExplosionAthletics.com and has complete information and registration forms.

WVU Indoor Meet Friday Dec. 4th

Bridgeport had two athletes compete at the Dec. 4th meet at WVU (click here for meet results).  Morganne Phillips competed in the 1600m and 3200m, while Matt Cummings competed in the 200m and Pole Vault.  Both did a great job for the first outing.  We hope to see many, many more of you competing at the next meet on January 8th.

2009 Photos

I am just about done adding the 2009 Photos to the BHS Track Website.  It has been an extensive process.  There are over 1100 photos from the 2009 season that I received from parents and athletes.  There are some great shots of our athletes in action.  Thanks to everyone who contributed photos to the site.  You can get there from the menu on the www.BridgeportTrack.com website or go directly there at www.BridgeportTrack.com/photo.htm

Coaching Staff Changes

As many of you already know.  The girls team has lost two members of their coaching staff.  Both Coach Dawson and Coach King have resigned.  Coach Dawson has accepted an assistant track position with South Harrison HS and Coach King will be home caring for her little one.  We wish them both the best.

As for the girls team we are hoping to have the staff in place very soon.  Depending on how those jobs are filled, we are hoping to combine the boys and girls teams into one family.  We believe this will benefit both teams by allowing us to use our coaches strengths to benefit all of our athletes.  Currently we have six coaches committed to working with the two teams.  Two are still awaiting completion of the WVSSAC Coaching class before we can have them approved officially.  The other 4 are familiar faces to the Bridgeport Track community.  Jon Griffith, Ryan Nicewarner, Jeff Weimer, and Steve Hastings all of whom were on staff last year.

Once the two girls positions are filled as well as any resulting positions made available as a result, we will be working to align the coaches and their coaching responsibilities based on their individual strengths.  With the 6 coaches committed, it looks like we will be able to cover all the various areas fairly well.  We are still looking for a couple of additional qualified coaches to add to the program.

Indoor Meets

The first indoor meet at WVU will be this Friday at 6:00pm.  The dates for the three remaining meets at WVU are as follow:

Friday Jan. 8th  6:00pm

The WV Flyers will also begin having their team practice on Sunday Dec. 6th at the Shell Building.  Details can be found on their site or by seeing me.

Pre-Season Conditioning

We will begin Pre-season Conditioning Tuesday Jan. 6th.  Athletes are to
meet in the cafeteria after school ready to workout.  We will meet every
Tuesday and Thursday until the beginning of Track season on March 2nd.  If
school is cancelled there will be no workout at the school.  Athletes
should continue to workout on their own, just as they should be doing on
M-W-F-S.  Track season is coming up quickly.  Let’s make sure we are
ready.

1st CC Meet

Today was the first CC meet for the 2008 season.  The team did very well.  The girls did not field a complete team, but will next week.  Erika Voreh placed 9th in a time of 24:14.   The boys finished in 4th place well up from last years 12th place finish.  Matt Mason placed 4th with a time of 19:39.  Seth Edgell came in 10th place at 19:53.

Complete results can be seen by clicking here.

CC Summer Practice – Phase 2

Starting Monday (June 30th) CC team members will be getting together informally at 10:00am each day M-F to run together for the rest of the summer until official practice starts on Aug. 4th.  They will meet in the City Park at the 1st Pavillion.  Seniors Matt Mason and Seth Edgell will be providing workouts for those in attendance.  If at all possible you should be there to run.  It is much easier to run with your team than to try and motivate yourself to run alone.  I will show Matt & Seth how to modify workouts for the younger or newer members of the team.  Remember we are trying to work our way up to 40 miles per week for everyone on the team by Aug. 4th.  Now is the time to start running, not once practice begins.
